Everything can be a sign!

Hi, Comment ça flippe?

I'm child number seven in my family. My name is Albert, Albert à Eddy à Arcade à Jos MoCauque. The old Acadian saying goes that the seventh child is the lucky one. These signs can often be more true than we believe, You never know!

The old-timers from our chez-nous of the Evangeline Region of Prince Edward Island have superstitions that come them from as far back as the Acadian Deportation!

Something enchanted?

For example, one day, my black cat crossed my path... that's a sign og bad luck. To make things worse, I turned around and saw a black crow... that's bad luck too... After all, for an Acadian, we must always have a bit of misery because if things are going too well... it's not normal! It's part of who we are. We're superstitious and we always will be!

For example, if the birds nests are low, there won't be much snow that Winter. If you break a dish, you're bound to break two more. There are too many to count, but here are a few!

-If a bird hits your window, bad news is on the way.
-If you go outside and forget something, when you go back inside you have to sit down or else you'll have bad-luck.
-When a family butchers a cow or a pig, they always give some to their neighbors. They call it the "morceau de voisin". It's for good luck.
-AND... The seventh child of the family will always have good luck!

Visits and superstitions surrounding visitors

While doing the dishes last night, I dropped the dishcloth. Julie, my wife, said "We're going to have a visitor!" My cat had his tail raised in the direction of the Mont-Carmel church. I immediatly thought: "I'm going to meet a stranger from the South-East." Sure enough, there I see a woman "gréyée" in old-fashioned dress. She was going house to house fundraising for some sort of good cause.

Other fun examples:

-If you have a sore on your tongue, that means you have told a lie.
-If you drop a knife, a man will soon visit.
-If you drop a fork, a woman will soon visit
--If you drop a teaspoon, a little girl will soon visit.
-If your shoelace comes undone, someone's thinking about you!
